What is the difference between Conglomerate or Micro Conglomerate Micro Marble, and Black Granite, Natural Limestone as well as Natural Marble?

December 22, 2010

With so many alternative stone based materials that are available for fireplaces, it is not surprising that the choice is overwhelming and complicated. Below is a list of the most popular materials used in fireplaces and a brief description of their make up.

Natural Stone / Marble & Black Granite

Natural marble is available in a verity of colours and shades. The most popular colours are creamy white and beige. This material is 100% natural and quarried from the earth. Each piece is unique in colour and texture. It is the natural variations that create the true beauty of this natural product

Conglomerate or Micro Marble

This material is made from crushed marble or stone mixed with resin then reformed. This removes any the natural flaws and colour variations associated with natural marble and stone. The main advantage of this material is colour consistency and hence the ability for a showroom or sample to truly represent what you will receive in your home.

Advantages of conglomerate stone vs Natural materials

1. Arguably why pay more for something reconstituted when a similar natural product costs the same? Essentially conglomerate stone has many more advantages than natural products (and it was developed to overcome some of the disadvantages of natural stone)

2. With natural marble or stone fireplaces, goods are always sold subject to natural permutations (which means your white fireplace could easily turn up with pink veining in your home).

3. Natural stone and marble has uncontrollable fossils which cause indentations and will frequently look like a chip or scratch on the surface of the fireplace.
