It is possible to use marble fire surrounds for use with wood or coal Fires if here is a suitable fire chamber (as shown below). The fire chamber diverts the heat away from the marble fireplace and hence eliminates the risk of cracking.

Helpful tips:

1. The fire chamber should be constructed with heat proof bricks. This is standard building practice that will be followed by any reputable installer. 2. The fireplace hearth should be slabbed (cut and rejoined) if the hearth will be in contact with direct heat. The slabbing process will prevent the hearth from cracking, by creating purpose built expansion and contraction joints for the heat to escape from. 3. In many circumstances it is possible to make a “T” shaped hearth that is fitted between the fire chamber.
